The Town of Caledon is a blend of urban and rural, modern and historic, all nestled between the Hills of the Headwaters, Oak Ridges Moraine and the Niagara Escarpment. Reporting to the Commissioner Planning, this role will provide strategic leadership and operational oversight for a multidisciplinary team responsible for guiding complex development projects with the Town. The Director, Development Planning will lead a diverse group of staff, Development Planners, Urban Design, Zoning as well as planning administrative support functions at a divisional and departmental level. The Director will ensure seamless processing of development applications, from initial consultation through to final approval while maintaining alignment with Town policy, regulatory requirements and Strategic Objectives. The Director will also oversee the administrative team that supports the larger Planning department, ensuring operational efficiency and coordination across divisions. As a key member of the departmental leadership team, the Director will exhibit exceptional people leadership, fostering a culture of innovation, accountability, and collaboration within the team. This role requires the ability to navigate the complexities of fast, large-scale urban development, decisively address resource and workload challenges, and represent the Department in discussions with council, developers and the community. Strong organizational skills, a deep understanding of urban planning and municipal governance, and the ability to lead under pressure are essential to success in this role.
With a post-secondary degree in public administration, business, or closely related field and eligibility for or full membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners, the ideal candidate will have a minimum of 10 years’ experience in municipal or private sector, with 5-7 years of leadership/progressive management experience at a senior level. You have significant experience at a management level in a municipal planning environment and demonstrated supervisory experience. You have demonstrated proven political awareness, the ability to make decisions involving long term strategic policies and will be someone who embodies and advocates for the Town’s mission, vision and corporate values whilst nurturing a culture of innovation and change.
